Rotorua's Bright Future

bright_future_final_logo_400During early 2008, Rotorua District Council reviewed its understanding of the community's desired outcomes and aspirations. A Stakeholder Workshop kicked off the process, followed by public surveys and focus groups throughout May. Altogether, almost 500 people took the opportunity to have their say.

Through this consultation process, Rotorua people reaffirmed a list of Community Outcomes first identified in 2004. The top issues to surface were community safety, the natural environment, community health and local prosperity. Not far behind were aspirations for excellent local facilities and services, valuing Rotorua's living Maori culture, and promoting a learning community and a ‘happening’ community. An overarching principle has also been added to the mix - visionary community leadership.

According to Rotorua District Council Chief Executive Peter Guerin: “These community outcomes are important for guiding the council, and other local organisations, when setting our future direction, and planning what we will be doing in coming years. As we develop our new Ten Year Plan we'll be making sure that everything we propose to do will contribute in some way towards achieving Rotorua’s community outcomes.”

The district council has recently begun working toward more of an environmental sustainability focus, for which it received a trophy in the Not-for-Profit category of the 2008 Bay of Plenty Sustainable Business Awards.
